Overview:

The mission of the Earlham Biofoundry is to work collaboratively with researchers across academia and industry to enable new research directions that drive innovation in the biosciences and bioeconomy. The successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to the development of the Earlham Biofoundry, including writing funding applications, defining strategy, and working with our business analyst and Director of Operations to revise cost models and ensure sustainability
  • Manage the space and equipment of the Earlham Biofoundry laboratory to maximise use by staff and collaborating researchers
  • Manage the Earlham Biofoundry staff, including visiting collaborators
  • Enable the delivery of established automated workflows as high-quality services
  • Develop and deliver collaborative research projects with internal and external scientists, including leading and contributing to grant applications and leading the development of novel automated workflows
  • Lead the promotion of the Biofoundry, delivering engaging communications to users, stakeholders, and the wider scientific community
  • Lead the development and delivery of training programmes in laboratory automation and synthetic biology
  • Contribute to scientific publications, reports and presentations as required by collaborating scientists, funding agencies, the Board of Trustees, and the Science Advisory Board
  • Interact with national and international networks for biofoundries and synthetic biology to exchange information and to keep abreast of new technologies and best practice

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Metabolic Engineering, Synthetic Biology, Microbiology or a related subject, and previous experience working as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist or have equivalent experience in academic or industrial laboratory. They will have an in depth understanding of molecular biology laboratory techniques including molecular cloning, purification of DNA, transfection and transformation, gene-expression analysis, genotyping. Skills in project management would be advantageous. Salary on appointment will be within the range £41,193 to £50,448 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post offered on a permanent basis.
